Pediatric dose
This converts a milligrams-per-kilogram dose into a dose in milligrams and, for a syrup, a volume in milliliters. Every result is checked against the adult ceiling you supply, because weight-based dosing in an older child can exceed it.

The formula
- Dose (mg) = weight (kg) × dose (mg/kg)
- Daily dose = dose × doses per day
- Volume (mL) = dose (mg) ÷ strength (mg per 5 mL) × 5
Worked example
Paracetamol 15 mg/kg for a 12 kg child → 180 mg. With a 250 mg/5 mL syrup, that is 3.6 mL.
When to use it
- Prescribing or dispensing any weight-based pediatric dose
And when not to
- Weight-based dosing must never exceed the adult maximum. Enter the ceiling so the calculator can flag it.
- Some drugs are dosed by body surface area, not by weight. Using mg/kg for those is wrong.
- Use actual measured weight. An estimated or historical weight is a common source of a ten-fold error.
- This calculator carries no drug database. It does the arithmetic you give it and nothing more.
