Modified Kuppuswamy socioeconomic scale
The Modified Kuppuswamy scale classifies an urban Indian family’s socioeconomic status from the head of the family’s education, occupation and total monthly family income. It is used constantly in Indian clinical research and in public health practice.

The formula
- Education of the head of the family: 1 to 7
- Occupation of the head of the family: 1 to 10
- Monthly family income: 1 to 12, against CPI-updated bands
- Total 3 to 29 → Class I (26–29) · II (16–25) · III (11–15) · IV (5–10) · V (under 5)
When to use it
- Recording socioeconomic status in Indian clinical research
- Public health assessment of an urban family
And when not to
- The income bands change every year. Using last year’s bands assigns the wrong class.
- It is an urban scale. Rural families are classified with the modified BG Prasad scale instead.
- It is a research and public-health instrument, and it is not a clinical assessment of anybody.
