The formula
- Mifflin-St Jeor: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5 (men) or − 161 (women)
- Harris-Benedict (revised): men 88.362 + 13.397W + 4.799H − 5.677A; women 447.593 + 9.247W + 3.098H − 4.330A
- TDEE = BMR × activity factor
Worked example
A 30-year-old man, 70 kg, 175 cm, moderately active (Mifflin) → BMR 1649 × 1.55 = 2556 kcal/day
When to use it
- Building a nutrition plan
- Estimating requirements for a stable inpatient
And when not to
- These equations were derived in healthy adults. They are unreliable in critical illness, where indirect calorimetry or a weight-based estimate is used instead.
- Activity factors are coarse and most people over-estimate their own.
